Si intitola Stretto di Messina perché per Delany quando un autore scrive o parla dei suoi scritti rischia sempre di finire o vittime della Scilla dell’arrogante presunzione o della Cariddi dell’infantile autoironia.
Però, continua Delany, lo scrittore ama quando parlano di lui, e quindi viene qui rispolverato uno degli alter ego di Chip, la critica e studiosa K. Leslie Steiner: "Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone say all the fine and brilliant things about my work I so desperately would like to hear…?"
La raccolta è uscita nel 1989 e raccoglie testi scritti dal 1973 al 1986.
The Scorpion Garden (1973)
È un’introduzione scritta per il romanzo Hogg, mai utilizzata in quanto il romanzo all’epoca non era ancora stato pubblicato. Del romanzo ho scritto sul mio blog. Qui Delany, partendo dalla pornografia, scrive sulla condizione della donna nel patriarcato e sulla loro rappresentazione in letteratura. Ammettendo anche la sua difficoltà a rappresentare correttamente le donne:
“I am distressed when, writing a novel in which I am consciously struggling to deploy men and women characters among the incidents of my tale in some way that violates this moral template, I discover the development of what I first thought some innocent piece of stage business or décor suddenly demands the situation resolve completely faithful to this sexual determinism”

Un saggio su Hogg, e sul tipo di pornografia che esso rappresenta, anche se viene proposto qui la definizione di anti-pornografia, che sta alla pornografia come l’anti-romanzo sta al romanzo. In Hogg gli uomini sono quasi tutti mostri:
“Delany feels the presentation of any female monstrousness without a firm, fictional appeal to the sociological, economic, and psychological indignities women are forced to endure (as a political class) on every front from men, is, at this point in history, merely a politically egregious cliché. I suspect he feels, further, that since the monstrousness with which men treat women, in all walks, so outweighs those times when women are brutalized into behaving monstrously in return, that to harp on a particular monstrousness from a woman before the monstrous-ness of men is fully explored and revealed for what it is, is to render the fiction, at this particular moment, somewhat irrelevant.

Ruins/Foundations; or: The Fall of the Towers Twenty Years After (1981-1985)
Scritto biografico sulla vita di Delany durante la scrittura della trilogia delle Torri: il matrimonio con la poetessa Marilyn Hacker, l’incontro con il celebre poeta Auden, la sua malattina mentale e il ricovero in Ospedale psichiatrico, le sue relazioni con altri uomini. Una versione più breve di questo testo è apparsa in The Motion of Light in Water.
The Early Delany (1981)
La risposta a un panel intitolato appunto “The Early Delany”, tenuto nel 1981 a Madison, Wisconsin. Ricordando la violenza che simili divisioni (Early, Late etc…) sono rispetto alla produzione di un autore (sopratutto se fatte da critici letterari), Delany conclude che:
“The “early Delany” begins with a fiction by a nineteen-year-old who, while he loved science fiction, was certainly not (at least when he began it) planning to write it for more than one book. It ends with another by a twenty-five-year-old who, having written eight more of the things, had more or less decided he didn’t want to write any more fiction of any sort— and didn’t, for about a year.”
